Topic description: This course provides students with an in-depth analysis of the art and architecture of Imperial Rome, from the rise of Augustus in the late first century BCE to the reign of Constantine in the early fourth century CE. By examining imperial portraiture, official state art, monumental public architecture, and provincial artistic traditions, students will investigate how Rome’s emperors used art and architecture to articulate power, identity, and ideology.
